Pest Control
There are many types of lawn pests in the lawn and the majority can be tolerated.
Leatherjackets

These are the grubs of the common crane-fly or “daddy long-legs”. These are one of the most common lawn pests in British lawns. They grow up to 5 cm long, live just below the surface and feed mainly on the grass roots. Most damage will be in the spring but they can develop in late autumn. There is also secondary damage quite often from birds pecking at the surface to get the grubs.
Chafer Grubs

The larvae of at least 5 types of chafer beetle. The larvae and adults can attack the grass. They appear as a C shaped Larvae up to 40 mm long with a brown head and 6 legs. They feed mainly on the roots.
Frit Flys

Not common in lawns but the larvae is 3-4 mm long yellow/brown in colour with curved mouth hooks. The larvae are stem boring grubs and can stunt the growth of the grass and in severe cases kill it. A good preventative measure is to keep the grass cut as they like mature plants. Common times for them to emerge will be June, July and August.
Worms

Worms are not a pest as such but their casts can cause problems and they can attract moles which can destroy your lawn. These castings can also smother the the grass around them and when flattened make an ideal make an ideal bed for weed seeds to develop on.
